“There we go,” Taylor said, crouching down and scooping up one of the puppies laying against the stomach of a large golden retriever. The dog had come in a month or so previously, dropped off by a homeowner who was incredibly surprised to find a heavily-pregnant dog taking shelter in their storage shed. She had delivered the puppies the day after coming to the shelter, and Taylor had made it her personal duty (and, well, part of her job, as “Director of Animal Care”) to make sure that the puppies got the best homes possible.

She leaned down and kissed the bitch on the nose before picking up a second puppy and standing up, tucking the dogs under her arms. She left the kennel and went down the hall to a small room where there was a young woman and her two daughters waiting patiently to play with the puppies.

Taylor opened the door and went in to the room, smiling when the girls squealed excitedly. “Normally, I'd let you guys take these two out to our puppy pen to play with them, but it looks like its going to storm, and they haven't quite developed their bravery yet.” She crouched down in front of the girls and put the puppies down. Immediately, the girls rushed forward to play with them. Taylor's smile grew. “Be careful with them, girls－they're still babies.”

The girls nodded. Taylor stood up and looked at the young woman. “I'm going to be just down the hall if you need me.” She pointed to a button on the wall. “If they make a mess, or if you need me to come back in, you can hit that button.”

The woman nodded. “Thank you.”

“You're welcome.”

Taylor left the room, shutting the door behind her. She went down the hall where there were two adults and a preteen boy standing by the kennel of an older dog. “Hello,” Taylor greeted, waving at the family before looking in at the dog. The ten-year-old bloodhound barked excitedly when he saw Taylor, his tail wagging and his aged limp barely even noticeable as he jumped. Taylor pulled a treat out of her pocket and tossed it to him. He leaped up and caught it. “Good catch!”

She turned back to the family, clapping her hands together. “Are you thinking about adopting Bruce?”

The mom shrugged and adjusted the purse on her shoulder. “Well, we’re considering it. Is he good with other animals?”

Taylor nodded. “He does great with both dogs and cats.” She pointed to the door in the back of the kennel. “When it’s nice outside, we let out dogs go out into the yard and play with each other, and Bruce is always one of the first dogs to shoot out his door.” She smiled. “Bruce’s previous home had cats, and they never had any issues with his temperament around them.”

The boy looked over at Taylor. “Why is he here, then, if he’s such a good dog?”

“His previous owner passed away last month, and, unfortunately, his extended family wasn’t able to have a dog.
